Beginner Classes

Summer Schedule

In addition to our summer fencing camps,

Getting Started – Little Cavaliers (Ages 6-8)

Our youngest fencers get started with fencing basics using plastic swords.  These plastic weapons require less protective clothing than metal weapons, but still give the feel of real fencing. As students gain coordination and control, they will advance to child-sized metal weapons and full protective gear. This class is for both beginning and continuing fencers ages 6-8 and meets once a week for 40 minutes for 6 weeks.

Thursdays 3:30-4:30

Little Cavaliers are enrolled on a rolling basis. To sign up, call (406) 926-2175 or email info@missoulafencing.net

Getting Started – Youth (9-15)

Youth beginners (ages 9 through 15) begin in our foil program. For the summer of 2020, beginners are enrolled on a rolling basis in a cohesive curriculum that covers the basics of footwork, bladework, and rules of fencing. In order to promote group cohesion and maintain consistent time slots, beginners are placed in the same class as Level 1 & 2 foilists for warm-ups and open fencing, but are separated for the lesson and drill part of class. Enrollment in this level includes weekly group foil classes on Tuesday from 5 to 6:30pm and open fencing on Monday and Wednesday from 6:30 to 7:30pm. Fencers are also encouraged to attend our community events, which are designed to be fun bonding activities outside of class.

  • Youth interested in trying fencing can get started with a free, 30-minute introductory lesson.
    • This lesson will include the basics of fencing movement, attack and defense, trying on gear, and practice sparring.
